Working In A School Without Being A Teacher: Is It Possible?
You leave school and never want to go back, and then you realise it wasn’t that bad in the first place. In later life, working with kids is rewarding and provides people with fulfilment. Plus, there’s the substantial wage that teachers receive. It’s nice to be able to fall back on £25,000 a year starting salary just in case. And, let’s not forget (like you could) about the holidays. Three months off a year is a hell of a lot considering most people only get six weeks. Teachers have that in one sitting!
The only thing is you hate the profession and don’t want to deal with the hassle. Still, it doesn’t matter if you follow one of these careers.
Counsellor
Mental health is a big deal for kids what with the rise of social media platforms and cyberbullying. As their self-esteem is fragile, to say the least, they need a kind, welcoming person to talk to on a daily basis. With a master’s in guidance counseling, there is the opportunity to work in a variety of educational establishments helping young minds. From primary to secondary schools to colleges and universities, they don’t ask for a teaching degree or for you to take classes but it is highly desirable that you have some form of child or adult safeguarding training.
Chef
It’s not only children’s mental health that is important because their physical wellbeing is too. As obesity levels in kids rise, schools need to do more to tackle bad eating habits and an unhealthy lack of dietary know-how. One way they do that is to turn to professional chefs. A chef is a person who is dedicated and passionate about food; therefore, they don’t use processed ingredients or empty calories. In the kitchen, you can use your knowledge of fresh produce to fill the student’s stomachs with tasty treats. Because they’re picky, the chefs have to come up with new recipes constantly.
Business Manager
Academies are the new thing in the UK as the government tries to circumvent local authorities. Run as businesses as well as schools, they mix teachers with outside sources who have zero knowledge of the classroom. After all, a foundation degree isn’t going to help a teacher keep the budget in check. Anyone with an affinity for numbers can monitor the school’s spending and come up with new ways to save money. You’ll also be in charge of ensuring ring-fenced money is used appropriately and not mishandled.
Security Guard
It’s not a nice thought, but kids in less economically developed areas are bringing crime into the classroom. Big cities where the problem is exacerbated are the main examples. As such, some schools are employing security guards or ex-police officers to ensure there aren’t any dangerous weapons on site. Also, these people check that students who are enrolled at the school are on the premises and no one else. It’s a risky job yet it’s a necessary one in this day and age.
Is it possible to work in a school without a teaching degree? The answer is yes if you want a career in any of the above.
