Enjoying the great outdoors is a fundamental necessity of the modern age. With the rise of technology and the dire economic times, getting into natural spaces is vital for clearing the mind and giving the muscles a bit of a workout. The problem is that it is usually soon over and you’re heading back to the unhealthy 9-5. It doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re sick of the toxic office space or you’re done with split shifts, then maybe it’s time to stop looking out of the window, strapping on some protective clothing, and taking your career into the great outdoors.
1. Environmentalist
People are more aware than ever of the need to look after the planet, and that means the demand for environmentalists is on the rise. Whether you end up with a job in the federal, corporate, non-profit sector or in the volunteer management sphere, this is a career for those who love the great outdoors and want to do some good while they’re there.
2. Wildland Firefighter
This isn’t a job for the timid. Wildland firefighters are a rare breed, and you’re going to need to go through a lot of training before you’re qualified. The job involves fighting fires in places where transport can’t get to, and that means your fitness levels are going to need to be very high indeed. Interesting and satisfying, but lots of tough work.

You’re going to need some serious education levels if you want to become a geologist. They’re also not the most highly paid workers in the world either. However, as you focus on a speciality (and as the world slowly realises the essential nature of the geologist’s role in the protection of the planet), you can be sure that this is a career that will grow in value and salary over the next decade.

Is there a career that’s as satisfying a being a farmer? Your own land, your own food supplies, and a reliance on a good relationship with mother nature make this a career that many dreams of but few are brave enough for. A green thumb is certainly going to be vital, but this is both a carer and a business venture that could satisfy the soul as much as the bank balance.
6. Lifeguard
Unless you live somewhere that is hot and sunny all year round, then this will only tend to be a seasonal job. It’s not a bad way to spend the summer months, though. Relaxing by the pool and ready to leap to the rescue when needed, this might not be all Baywatch and adventure. You’ll probably spend more time scanning the water than you will in it (but that’s not a bad way to spend your day).
Offices can be stifling, dull, and unhealthy. If you’re sick of staring at spreadsheets or you don’t think you can cope with another shift on the factory floor, perhaps it’s time to start thinking of escape. Where better to escape than the great outdoors? You might find more options for a satisfying and healthy career than you thought possible.
