3 ways to ensure your staff are happy at work
If you were to look behind the scenes of any successful small business, you will, more often than not, find a team of dedicated and motivated staff.
If your employees are happy, they are more likely to work hard and go the extra mile for you. Treat them poorly, and the results could be quite different.
Here are 3 ways to ensure your staff are happy at work.
Two-way communication
Communication is paramount when it comes to being a good employer. If your staff are doing a great job – tell them. If you feel they would benefit from additional training, discuss it with them, and implement it.
Many businesses carry out staff appraisals, which are a great way to give and obtain feedback. If staff feel that they can come to you and discuss their ideas, thoughts, and concerns, it could make a difference to their overall performance and job satisfaction.
It’s suggested that (partly due to gadgets and technology) millennials, in particular, find communicating on a face to face basis difficult. Being approachable will make them feel more comfortable around you and make them more inclined to open up to you.
Where possible, provide them with effective communication tips and advice, and meet at regular intervals to monitor their progress. Improving communication will not only be beneficial when liaising with colleagues but will prove equally as useful when communicating with customers or suppliers.
Clearly defined roles and procedures
If a staff member is confused about their role, they are unlikely to feel content or happy. Clearly defined roles and procedures can make a big difference in this regard. Whilst certain staff functions may overlap from time to time, each employee should know what their responsibilities are and the tasks which fall within their remit.
As your company grows and staff levels increase, it is easy for staff to deviate from existing procedures, which can ultimately lead to confusion. Before you know it, your staff are all doing things differently, and the result is a department that is in disarray. This can cause resentment, confusion, and ruin any existing team dynamics.
Putting together a manual of standard procedures can help immensely, and also comes in handy when you recruit new staff members. Just make sure that if a procedure changes or a new process is implemented, the manual is altered too.
Salary and benefits
Whilst many people are dedicated to their jobs and love going to work, they still expect to be fairly paid. That’s why it’s so important to ensure that your employees are being paid commensurate to their role and their experience.
If you aren’t paying them the going rate or acknowledging their efforts, they will feel unappreciated. This could lead to them becoming demotivated or even leaving to work for a rival company.
It would be impossible to keep everyone satisfied all of the time, but a dedicated and happy workforce will play a big part in the success of any business.
