5 Ways to Dress to Impress at Your Interview
Getting ready for a business interview, or any other interview for that matter can be quite stressful. Aside from trying to remember everything you want to say and ask, and making a conscious effort to keep your cool, you need to decide what to wear for your interview as well. This in and of itself can be quite a challenge. Especially considering the fact that you only get to leave the first impression once. So, of course, you want to come off as professional – but not too professional; casual – but not too casual, etc.
That’s why we’ve decided to help you out and discuss what’s the best way to ensure you’ll be dressed to impress for your next interview.
Take care of your appearance
Before we start discussing clothes and other accessories, it’s important to mention personal hygiene. Simply put, no matter how well-dressed you are, nobody will notice it if you’re not well groomed yourself. That’s why you should ensure your hair is freshly washed and styled for the interview. There’s no reason to go crazy and entirely change your appearance. Simply make sure you’re clean and freshly showered, trim your beard and cut your fingernails. A well-groomed appearance will instantly leave a positive impression on the interviewers.
Rely on staples
Once you’ve taken care of your hygiene, it comes the time to decide what to wear. The safest bet would be to keep things business-casual. This may initially seem to bland for an interview where you want to be noticed and remembered but it’s really not. To add a bit of oomph to your look, you can always opt to add a detail that pops. This can be either a gorgeous pair of Moon Magic iconic earrings or a nice statement wristwatch. The devil is in the details, so make sure you choose the right ones that will only add to your look.
Do your research
Even though we’ve mentioned earlier that business-casual is almost always the best choice, you should still research the company you’re having an interview with. Some companies are quite strict when it comes to dress code, so the last thing you want is to be underdressed when showing up for your interview. However, even if that happens try not to let it affect your confidence too much. Remember, the reason you were invited for the interview in the first place are your qualities, not your wardrobe.
Don’t step out of your comfort zone too much
Additionally, try to refrain yourself from stepping out of your comfort zone too much. One of the most common mistakes people make when choosing what to wear for an interview is going too far with their garments. There really is no reason for you to wear your 12inch heels for an interview, unless you’re absolutely confident in them. And let’s be real – most of us are not. Trust us, you won’t look either well-put-together or professional if you’re walking like a fresh-born calf. Instead, opt for shoes that are absolutely comfortable but presentable as well. And no, Converse or Vans are not a better option either.
Choose the right perfume
Even though the choice of perfume smell is quite an individual thing, you really need to be careful when choosing. Ideally, you should choose a soft and subtle smell that will be present but not overpowering. You may wish to choose a product from somewhere like True Pheromones, that has been chemically designed to boost your confidence and communicate trust and respect to those who smell it. Keep in mind that the interviewers are also people. Which means they can be suffering from sense sensitivity or even sense-triggered migraines. And, of course, the last thing you want is to give any of your interviewers a migraine.
So, when choosing your outfit for an interview, don’t stress too much about it. Try to keep thigs as “business” as you feel comfortable but also as “casual” as the place you’re interviewing for allows it. Add some statement pieces to your look to boost your confidence and always make sure you’re clean and well-groomed.
