Transitioning From Employed to Self-Employed: Have You Got What It Takes?
When you are looking for a job, the search can seem relentless and less than enjoyable. But instead of looking for a job, you could consider creating your own and working for yourself. This can feel like a daunting thing to do, though, simply because it is a pretty big leap from getting a regular wage from an employer. Of course, you need to have an idea of what you want to be doing for your business or as a freelancer. But if you have a plan and an idea, then you might just need the push to go for it. So with that in mind, here are some learnings or considerations about taking the leap from being an employee to a freelancer (or even business owner). Hope it helps.
Look Into Finances
If you are going to be setting up a business, you need to be thinking about what you are going to do to get it all up and running. What kind of money would you need to get the business started? For some, especially the ones just looking for freelance work, will just need a laptop to get going. But for a business with stock or supplies, would you need to look into unsecured business loans if you can’t finance it all yourself, at least at first? Make a thorough plan for yourself and then work out what you will need to get it going, and how much it is all going to cost you.
Do Research
Whatever you plan to get into, if you haven’t got exact experience of it from before, then you need to do your research. Things like how much you’d charge for a website logo or for writing copy could be what you’d be required as a freelancer. But how much are you prepared to charge? Then you need to look at what the going rates are so that you’re competitive, as well as research into if there is a need for what you do. So particularly for business ideas, look at competitors and how well they are doing. If they are struggling, then would there be room for you?
Motivation
When you’re out there on your own, doing your own thing, working your own hours, and finding your clients or customers, you are the only person that you are accountable to. And while that can bring with it many great things, it can also be hard work. If you’re prepared to work and get out there to find clients, for example, then how will you have money coming in? So you need to decide what motivates you and why you want to work for yourself. Once you know, then it makes it much easier to b productive, and get yourself up and at it to do work.
Find a Niche
From a business point of view, as well as when you’re working for yourself, you need to find a niche. This will help you to get the customers and clients that you want, without being too general. There can be a worry when a freelancer does a bit of everything, that they aren’t skilled in all things. People are looking for experts in their field, so having a niche will demonstrate that.
