Better Your Employees. Better Your Business

You should always be looking to better your employees. They’re the ones turning up to work everyday, probably earlier than you are, and doing the jobs that you don’t want to do. They might bring their fair share of issues, but without them, you wouldn’t have the business that you do. So, if you want to better your business? Where is the first place you should be looking? It’s not within all these different strategies that are floating about now, it’s within the different employees that are working for you. So, let’s talk about how we can better your employees.

Good Cop/ Bad Cop

This is a role that you’re going to have to learn to play the part of so perfectly. To be a good cop, you need to learn how to be friendly with them, and interact with them on a more personal level. You wouldn’t believe how many companies fail at this, and how many employees report a hostile environment when the company manager is around. This negative environment is obviously going to lead to its fair share of problems along the way. However, the last thing you want to do is be too nice to them as well. When this happens, it’s easy to forget boundaries, and the levels of work that they can produce might just drop. When being the bad cop, you should always try and take the role lightly. By bad cop, we mean you should be the one telling them about their mistakes, and showing them how they can do better. You should never be dragging them down for their mistakes, which a lot of business owners tend to do.

Better Training

Some companies are so hot on training, and others don’t even seem to bother with it. But ongoing training can turn a business that’s floating by, to a business that is excelling in what it does. Training can be to do with anything, and we don’t just mean training on the job. We think you should invest in some courses outside of the office to try and develop their knowledge. If you try this, you’ll find a ton of courses that could relate to your business. You should always make sure that the employee in question is happy with going ahead with the course. The last thing you should do is throw them onto something that they’re not happy doing, especially if they have a lot going on outside of work.

Progression

Progression is everything to most employees. They enter into a job wanting to go far, but a lot of companies keep them stuck at the bottom, even if they have potential. You should always be thinking of ways that you can progress your employees. Whether that be stepping them up to a new role, or just giving them smaller roles to try and complete. With progression usually comes a rise in pay, so make sure you have something structured in place to make sure all employees receive the same. If you’re just progressing the same employees all of the time, you could have a nightmare on your hands from the others.
