Business Risks You Should Manage In House

Running a business in any industry is not without risks. You will need to follow the trends in your area of business, make sure that your employees are happy and content, manage your reputation, and ensure that you are maintaining your balance sheet,  so you can keep your shareholders on your side. While some companies decide to outsource some of the risk management processes, it is recommended that you manage the below areas in house.

Fraud Risk

When you take on a new employee, you will need to vet all the applicants and find out how loyal they are likely to be. There are plenty of personality tests you can conduct during the interview or when you finalize the contract. A credit check, for example, will tell you whether they have financial problems that make them vulnerable and more likely to commit fraud. Make sure that you get all their qualifications and references carefully checked, too. If you need to improve your HR department, it will be well worth the investment.

Financial Risks

You should not let financial planning out of your control. While there are plenty of great financial advisors out there, you don’t really want them to make decisions on your behalf. You are the person who knows your business the most, and the person with a vision. Evaluate every financial decision and carry out a risk assessment, so you can make the most out of your business growth.

Environmental Risks

Due to the increased level of regulations, you will need to assess environmental risks, too. As you and your employees know what is going on in your business the most, it is recommended that you carry out the assessments in house. You can enroll one of your employees in an ASSET Ecology Training and make them responsible for evaluating environmental and ecological risks associated with your business.

Reputational Risks

Your business reputation is one of your most valuable assets. Look after you, and it will look after you. Monitor your brand’s performance, your customer feedback, and your company rating on different online platforms, so you can address issues before they could ruin your reputation. Employees who don’t comply with the code of conduct can also damage your brand image significantly.

Compliance

Breaches can cause more damage than you would think. If you don’t comply with the external regulations, you might be fined, your license could be suspended, and you could lose some of your most profitable customers, as well. That is why you should always manage your compliance policies and documents in house and provide your staff with adequate training on the updated regulations. Compliance issues can give your competitors an edge and reduce your brand value, too.

There are some business risks that should be managed in house. If you want to be in control of where your company is going, and would like to prevent fraud, compliance issues, or reputational damage, train your staff to deal with these areas and create rules everyone follows.
