Care Home workers face many challenges throughout their working day as you will be aware. Often shifts are long and physical and emotional demands are made of them routinely. Care Home workers are naturally compassionate and caring but in order to sustain the role successfully a number of skills and qualities are required and the following are essential when you are considering hiring someone. 

1. A friendly and approachable manner is essential with the ability to talk to clients in a non judgmental and open way. The ability to put clients at ease and listen and respond appropriately. Someone who communicates well appropriately with all kinds of people.

3. Patience and respect at all times not just for the client but for their families too. Elderly clients may be slow and in some cases reluctant or unwilling to do what is asked of them.
4. Flexible in their approach as tasks are variable and shift work may be required. Shifts can be long.
5. Someone who is reasonably fit and active as staff are required to be on their feet for long periods of time helping clients dress, wash and organise themselves.
6. A good sense of humour and a positive outlook to life. Working in a care home can be challenging, clients can be in poor health or going through very difficult circumstances in their life. 9. The ability to multi task is essential as the role is varied and it may require you to leave one task and move with ease to another very quickly and at several points throughout the day.
10. Professionalism is essential. The care worker will be working as part of a team with other staff members. They need to be able to communicate at all levels and demonstrate a competent and dignified manner at all times.

It is essential that those who choose to work in the caring profession have a genuine desire to do so. They must have a genuine interest in the care and the welfare of others. If this is lacking, clients will very quickly pick this up. This is a basic premise and if someone is only interested in the position as a job to pay the bills, they are unlikely to be successful in the role.
