China’s Most In Demand Skills and China’s Top 10 Provinces for Talent

Are you looking to develop a career or business in China, one of the world’s fastest emerging economies? Competition is fierce in many developed economies as companies, employers and job seekers battle for market share and jockey for position in a post recessionary world which is high on opportunity, but also high on caution and competition.

Savvy professionals and job seekers are looking to get off the beaten path and find new emerging channels to: sell their products and services, to open offices, to source materials and labour and of course to find and build a career. Brazil, India, Russia and China are the most high profile emerging nations; however, they all present unique cultural challenges to professionals from developed economies. Mainly, there is a culture shock and a lack of cultural awareness of how the countries operate in a business sense.

And with China just finalizing its new visa for ‘urgently needed’ professionals to attract expats, we could see a wave of talent from developed economies look to take up posts or set up outposts in China.

So, what kind of skills is China in urgent need of? According to the insider report in the China Daily the most urgently needed skills in China are:

• senior management professionals at globally renowned enterprises, financial institutions, accounting firms and architecture offices, with profound knowledge in the field and its international rules;
• senior specialists at globally renowned enterprises, financial institutions and accounting firms and architecture offices, with independent intellectual property rights and the core technology;
• senior science and education professionals at globally renowned universities and institutions, with ranks equal to professor who have made great contributions to the development of a particular field;
• renowned cultural, arts and sports figures being globally received, or winners of major international awards in their field;

OK, so there is demand for talent in China. But, where are the best provences for talent and jobs?

Most of you will of course already know about Beijing and that it is a hub for jobs and talent. But, where else; where else outside Beijing should international executives go to find top talent, top jobs and a great all round commercial environment.

Well, a recent study by Gui Zhaoming, director of the Hubei-based Talent Development Research Center and Wang Huiyao, head of the newly-formed Beijing-based China Global Talents Society,  reported in newis.xinhuanet.com has listed the top 10 provincial regions in China in terms of talent competitiveness.

These are:

1. Beijing,
2. Jiangsu,
3. Shanghai,
4. Guangdong,
5. Zhejiang,
6. Shandong,
7. Tianjin,
8. Liaoning,
9. Fujian
10. Chongqing

The evaluation criteria were: numbers, quality, living environment and their innovation ability and contribution to local development in different regions on the Chinese mainland.

It also noted that in 2010, combined together, Guangdong, Beijing and Jiangsu received around 70 percent of all the returnees who had studied in overseas universities.
