Don’t Feel Pressured To Find The Perfect Job Straight Out Of Uni
Graduating university is an incredible and terrifying experience all at once. It’s the happiest day of your life in that you’ve finally finished education. You’ll never have to attend another lecture again. You’ll never have to stay up until the early hours of the morning finishing a piece of coursework for a poorly-chosen module ever again. You’ll probably never have to study for another exam again (unless you apply for specific job roles which demand some sort of entry level test).
Still, despite having a degree in your hand and the world at your feet, it’s likely that you’re feeling overwhelmed and daunted by the huge landscape before you. The important thing to remember is that every other graduate is feeling the same way. You’ve no idea what you want to do with your life, but you feel as if you need to find a respectable job straight away in order to validate going to uni in the first place.
Have some recovery time to think about what you want to do.
You’ve just spent three or more years of life studying for a degree. It was exhausting, and you’re mentally drained (you’re possibly physically drained too). You’re allowed to give your brain some time to recover from this ordeal. Go abroad, do things with friends whilst you’re all free, and take up a hobby. Find the time to do things that you didn’t have time for at uni. Learn something about yourself, and you might just find that ideas pop into your head, in time, as to what you want to do. Maybe a graduate scheme will be more appealing to you than jumping straight into a career you’re unsure about.
Don’t dismiss the small guy.
You don’t have to look up at the skyscrapers towering in the sky with big brands plastered on their side. The reason you’re struggling to get a job with those big corporate entities is that every single graduate in the country is applying to them. We’re all led to believe that those are the only jobs worth having; the big names are safe, secure, and lucrative. The problem is that this is a huge blow to the confidence of those hundreds of applicants who don’t get a role at a certain company, when, in actual fact, there was only ever one vacancy available and only one of those dozens of hundreds of incredible people was going to get it.
Instead, you should pay attention to small employers. There are thousands upon thousands of amazing small companies out there which do the same thing that the half a dozen big names in every industry do. You need experience if you want to get anywhere in the world, but it’s obviously a double-edged sword; you can’t get experience until an employer gives you a chance. If you opt for the small guy, however, you might just get that chance, as there will be fewer applicants. You could check out sites for jobs in Guernsey if you wanted somewhere to begin in that area. Remember, don’t just search for the big names. Search for the industry you’re intrigued by; see what comes up, and go for the little names.
Save money.
You don’t know what’s coming next, but you’ll probably need money. If you’re planning on moving out from your parent’s place then make the most of what is probably a rent-free (or low rent) stay and save up any money you’re making from a part-time job or anything that’s left over from uni. You’re only just an adult, but it makes sense to start saving early so that you’re prepared for the future.
