Fast Ways to Feel Happier at Work

Some of us love our work and are always happy when we are in the office, while many of us struggle to feel good about our jobs and the places where we spend 8 hours of our days five days per week.

If you are one of the latter, and you often feel unhappy at work, you might be interested to know there are lots of things you can do to feel happier at work in a flash. Implement some of them whenever you’re feeling less than great and you will soon notice a change in your mood.

Reward yourself

If you are struggling to get through that boring work task and it’s making you blue, promise yourself a reward if you get X amount done in Y amount of time. This can be anything from a croissant on your break to adding a dollar to your rewards jar so that when you have enough saved you can buy yourself something nice – it doesn’t matter as long as it gives you a boost.

Optimize your tech

When the tech you use at work is working at optimum levels, it makes your life easier, gives you a sense of accomplishment, and makes you feel happier. So, whether you use the tips here to clear the scratch disk on your Mac or you learn how to install dictation software to make typing easier, do what you can to improve your tech right now, and you’re sure to feel better once you’re done.

Play some music

Make a playlist of the songs you love, which always make you feel happy, and play them whenever you are feeling down at work. Not only will it lift your spirits, but many studies have shown that listening to upbeat music can improve productivity levels, so it could make you more effective at your job too.

Meditate

If you are really feeling stressed out and unhappy at work, then taking a few minutes to close your eyes, focus on your breath, and meditate can do wonders for your mood, and again, your productivity levels too. Meditation has been proven to help busy office workers to relax with more ease, gain some perspective and come back to their work feeling more refreshed than ever – it is never a waste of time – so if your boss tries to complain about your meditation breaks, be sure to point them towards the bundles of research you can find on the subject.

Look at your plants

If you do not have a plant on your desk at work, you really ought to change that right now. Why? Because studies have shown that plants and flowers in the office can boost mood, help workers to relax, and boost productivity. It is hard to be unhappy when surrounded by nature, so having a small part of the natural world in your workplace and taking time to admire it often, can instantly boost your mood when you are struggling at work.

Smile

This might sound silly, but just the act of smiling can make you feel happier. It can also help to boost the moods of those around you. So, if you’re having a tough day at work and you want to feel better sooner, rather than later, simply plaster a smile on, have a positive attitude, and before you know it you and your colleagues will be feeling much happier.

Take a walk

If you are feeling blue, when you have your break, instead of eating a sandwich at your desk or working through, get up and get out. The act of walking will help to get the blood and oxygen flowing to your brain, as well as those endorphins pumping around your body, which will instantly elevate your mood when you get back to your desk. If you can walk in nature, then its soothing effects will help you to turn your mood around even more.

Chat to your colleagues

Taking the time to say hi and make small talk with colleagues is a good way to help you feel more connected with the people around you in the workplace. The more friends you have, the easier it will be for you to maintain a sunny disposition, most of the time, at least.

As you can see, there are lots of things you can do to feel happier at work fast, so next time you’re feeling blue, why not try doing one of the above to see how much better it can make you feel – what do you really have to lose?
