Google’s 8 Rules of Good Line Management
In March of this year, Google released the results in their in-house survey into the reasons that people left their organizations.
It was a substantial study which included more than 10,000 observations about managers, based on over 100 variables, taking date from various performance reviews, feedback surveys and other reports. They coded this date and analysed it and looked for patterns.
It was from this analysis that they identified 8 Rules of Good Line Management, which are summarised below in the graphic.
I feel that these rules although designed by a medium sized business are applicable to all sizes of businesses, including of course small businesses.
They also identified three pitfalls of managers and these too are included the graphic.

This google research is an excellent starting point and there are several other books that I would recommend for anyone looking to start a career in line management or improve their skills.
