How To Afford Expensive Equipment For Your Business

To compete with rival businesses, you need to be using the best tools available. Some of these tools can be expensive if you’re buying them outright brand new. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to save money on this business equipment if you’re on a tight budget.

Time your purchase right

At certain times of the year, you may be able to save money on equipment due to discounts and special promotions. Black Friday and the January Sales often have deals on office equipment such as printers and desks. In fact, many companies in the business to business world are joining in on these annual promotion events.

Seasonal deals can also be worth looking out for in some industries. If you want to buy a professional pressure washer hose or an air conditioning unit, it might be better to buy these items in winter. In summer, the demand is high, and so sellers are less inclined to run promotions on these items.

Opt second-hand

A lot of equipment can be bought cheap second hand. Age can be an important factor to consider – you don’t want to buy an old machine that keeps breaking and make up costs in repairs. Factory machinery and vehicles should always come with a service record. This will allow you to see what repairs have previously been made, allowing you to assess how reliable the machine is.

If you’re ordering heavy equipment second-hand online, be wary of the condition as you may not be able to see it in-person before buying. Remember that the further away the seller is, the more you’ll have to pay for delivery.

Certain equipment ideally shouldn’t be bought second-hand such as clothing and upholstery as this may contain bacteria from a previous user.

Hire, don’t buy

In some cases, you may be able to lease equipment. By paying in smaller installments, this may be a more manageable option. This could include looking into van leases rather than buying a company vehicle or even leasing out office computers. In some cases, you may only need such equipment on the odd occasions, and so renting on one-off instance could be cheaper. This could be ideal for specialist handyman tools. Hire companies generally stock the best quality gear going. There are things to watch out for – you don’t want to lease an item for so long that you pay more than its sale value. You also don’t own the item by leasing it and so might need to take care not to damage it as this could result paying for repairs.

Get it on loan

You can also buy certain equipment on loan. This could include borrowing from a lender or using a credit card and then paying the seller. Occasionally an equipment company may offer the chance to pay in installments. Usually the catch is that you will have to pay interest on these installments, so decide whether it worth paying less in the short term to pay more in the long run.
