How to become more confident at work
Being self-confident is important in all aspects of life, but it’s especially important at work. Naturally, some people are more confident than others, so for those that aren’t, they have to improve on their confidence.
Yes, you can become more confident in your daily life which will also affect your role at work. We’re going to look at five ways of how to become more confident at work. Time to get started.
Practice Public Speaking
One of the main areas in which employees in the workplace aren’t confident is in public speaking. For example, in meetings with many people, or if you are having to present to your line manager or even people higher in the business. Public speaking is a skill that can be learned at the end of the day, so one way to gain confidence is by practicing it. If it’s not public speaking that you struggle with, practice whatever does make you uncomfortable.
There are now many courses online that can help with public speaking. A quick Google search will offer you some options. Also, there are hours of videos on YouTube that give tips on how to become a better public speaker, and with that gain more self-esteem.
Focus on Strengths Not Weaknesses
Instead of getting caught up with what you’re not great at, you should focus on what you are good at. If you find this hard to think of, get a pen and paper and start listing which tasks at work you enjoy. Generally, what you enjoy corresponds to what you’re good at. If you find something straightforward to do that others find difficult this is a great way to get a boost in self-confidence.
It’s also important to not put yourself down when you do something wrong or don’t excel in a particular area. As silly as it might sound, telling yourself that you can do this or that and that you are confident can help to change your outlook.
Set Goals
Setting goals doesn’t feel like it should impact self-confidence like some of the others, but it can help. By setting goals you print these in your mind and do everything you possibly can to achieve them. When you hit one of the goals that feeling gives you a boost in confidence.
Even if you fail to meet one of your goals, you would have worked hard towards it. Reflecting on what was needed to hit the goal is a great way to keep an open mind and not punish yourself for not getting there.
Continuous Learning
In work, as well as in life, it’s important to keep learning rather than remaining stagnant. If you want to grow in your career you’ll have to learn each day to reach your goals.
It is this learning that makes you a smarter person which gives the knock-on effect of feeling more confident. Even if you only feel more confident in a specialised area, when you speak to others about your work you won’t be panicking as it will be like second nature.
Ask Questions
The fifth and final point on how to become more confident at work is to ask more questions. If you don’t fully understand a task or project that you’re working on, it’s best to ask for clarification before beginning. Starting and submitting work without understanding if you’re on the right path could lead to lower confidence from taking a different (wrong in some eyes) approach.
As mentioned already, you’ll be able to excel in some areas whether others won’t and vice versa. This is another reason to ask many questions, you can learn from other people at work from being curious and wanting to learn more about subjects that might not be in your field.
