How to succeed as a freelance beauty therapist
When it comes to working as a freelancer, whether it be a freelance beauty therapist, personal trainer, writer, or even cleaner, the majority of your work is likely to be obtained via networking and referrals. With that being said, you should always focus on maintaining high standards and being as reliable as possible.
Practice makes perfect
If you are going to be a successful beauty therapist, freelance or otherwise, experience is going to be your best friend. Practice on your family and friends as this will help you to gain confidence whilst simultaneously developing your skills and talents. This will boost your portfolio and help you attract paying clients. Plus, you can guarantee the honest opinion of your relative or friend, and if something is to go wrong, it won’t be a complete disaster.
Take out beauty insurance
You must have viable beauty insurance to protect yourself and your reputation should something go wrong. A client may suffer an adverse reaction to a product or a treatment, unfortunately, this could lead to a compensation claim and should this happen, you will need to be protected. Thankfully, a good beauty insurance policy will help to ensure your future as a beauty therapist is safe. Additionally, if you are travelling from client to client, you will need the relevant car insurance to protect your equipment in case anything happens. You will also need to make it known to your insurance policy if you plan to work from home.
Keep a record of your finances
Within the first three months of working for yourself and receiving payment from your first invoice, you must register as self-employed. The current personal allowance before you pay taxes is £11,000 so you don’t pay anything until you’ve earned that amount over the tax year. By keeping your financial records in order, you will make life far easier for yourself. Always be sure to state income and expenditures, file all receipts in folders so everything is order for when it comes to doing your taxes.
Always act professional
If you specialise in hair, make-up or nails, a car isn’t necessary to be a mobile beauty therapist. So long as you have a suitable case to carry your equipment safely, you can get around on foot or by public transport. However, if you include massages, waxing or facials in your portfolio, you’re going to need a car.
When visiting a client’s home, make sure you’re smartly dressed and always introduce yourself at the door with a handshake. Whilst carrying out treatments, enhance the customer’s experience by using a music app to create an ambiance. Never get distracted and always keep to timings.
With your equipment, you should always bring a portable bin to dispose of your rubbish, especially if waxing and nails are included in your list of treatments.
Hone self-promotion
Advertise yourself using your own website and social media. This type of engagement works well with beauty therapists who work in make-up, hair and nails, as you are often able to work freelance on weddings and various photo shoots. When uploading photo of your work, make sure it’s always of the best quality, matches the competition and states your name, complete with prices and hash tags.
