How You Can Safe Guard Your Data
No matter what you do for a living, whether you run your own business, or you work for someone else, and no matter what you do for fun, you are going to use a computer at some point. You might use it all day, every day, or it could be an occasional thing, but either way, the data that you have on that piece of equipment is going to be amongst the most important thing you own. Therefore, it pays to keep it safe. Here are some ways to do it.
Back Up
One of the easiest ways to safeguard the data on your computer is to back it all up on a regular basis. The more often you do this, the safer your data will be. If anything goes wrong, and you lose a lot of information, regular backing up means there will always be a fairly recent version of your data to restore. Even if your entire computer breaks down irretrievably, you can still save your data.
The most important point when it comes to backups is to ensure you are using an external source to back everything up; simply backing up the information on one part of your computer to another won’t help you if the computer fails. Use the cloud or an external drive to be completely safe.
Use A Firewall
Having a firewall in place will protect your data from cyber-attacks. The firewall effectively works as a buffer against any malicious software that might be downloaded to your computer, and it prevents it from getting far enough into your operating system to do damage.

Password Protect Documents
On some programs, including the applications available from Microsoft Office, as well as Adobe Acrobat, you are able to set passwords on documents, adding an additional layer of security. If the person trying to open the document doesn’t have the password, they won’t be able to see the potentially sensitive information inside.
Passwords aren’t just useful for individual documents, but for your entire network too. Make sure that wherever you are able to use a password, you do so. It should be something that is difficult to guess, and never a name, date of birth, or phone number, for example. Ideally, you should choose a random set of numbers, letters, and special characters. This password will be almost impossible to crack, but it will also be impossible to remember, so a password management program can be used to keep track. This is especially useful since you should change your password every few months to keep it secure.
Use The Cloud
We’ve already mentioned how useful the cloud is for backing your data up, so why not use it to its full potential and save everything to the cloud all the time? Working on software such as Dropbox or Google Drive means that nothing is saved on your computer, and you’ll never lose any data. Even if the laptop is stolen, or broken you won’t lose any time, since you can log into the cloud from any computer as long as you have the login details.
