Nurturing a Productive Workforce

Any small business owner will be able to tell you that taking on staff can prove to be one of the most daunting steps in a company’s progression. After all, you automatically take on a position of authority and responsibility as soon as you become an employer. But as long as you’re experiencing success, you’re going to have to expand and at the end of the day you can’t take on every aspect of work to do with the business alone. So, seeing as you’re going to have to take on a workforce at some point or another, how can you ensure that you’re getting the most for your money? Here are a few different ways that you can nurture a truly productive set of staff members!

Training

When you employ staff, it’s your responsibility to ensure that they are all comfortable within their roles and know exactly what they’re doing. This is why you need to give each and every staff member role-specific training before you send them out to the office, store, or whatever commercial property they’ll be operating in. Although necessary, training can be time-consuming and repetitive but it doesn’t have to be if you incorporate all your knowledge into a learning management system such as totara lms which when configured can automate the delivery of your training to multiple new starters without your involvement.

Sales staff should receive Salesforce training, brand ambassadors should be given information on each and every product you stock, and advertisers should be debriefed on market research you’ve conducted and previous campaigns you’ve launched. You can’t just expect everybody to know exactly what they’re meant to be doing from the get-go. Even if they have plenty of previous experience, the companies that they have previously engaged with might have gone about things in an entirely different way to your company and brand.

Measuring Achievement

If you want your employees to work consistently and to a high standard, you should actively observe them. Various studies have shown that people are more likely to do what they’re meant to be doing if they are aware that an authority figure is monitoring them. Now, this doesn’t mean that you should quite literally be watching over your employees’ shoulders at any given moment. This is actually more likely to interrupt their workflow and throw them off track, as they’ll be focussing more attention on you watching them than they will be putting into their work. But what it does mean is that you should consider tracking and charting each individual’s progress in their role. You can do this quantitatively by working out the number of leads that they have generated, sales they have made, or contracts that they have secured. This will give both you and your employee a good overview of how their work is progressing and whether they are keeping up with the average that is expected of them. Remember to try to only use the results that you find in a positive manner. Bear in mind that there could be various professional or personal factors beyond their control that affect their progress. For example, they may be suffering from illness or other personal problems, or there might be a delay in raw materials being delivered, or the internet and phone lines may have gone down.

Encouraging Team Spirit

While individual brilliance is an attractive trait in any employee, teamwork is equally important when it comes to creating a productive workforce. Why? Well, your employees are the backbone of your company and they’re all going to have to draw together in order to get the best results for the overall benefit of the business. Collaboration between workers can come out with excellent results, as each individual will be able to bring their own strengths to the table. As the old saying goes, many hands make light work! So, what’s the best way to go about bringing this otherwise disparate group of people together? The answer? Team building activities. While most people will sigh or roll their eyes as soon as “team building” workshops are announcing, they are actually pretty effective when put into action. They create the opportunity for your employees to break the ice with one another. This can result in more positive relationships between different team members, meaning that communication within the workplace will be more natural and effective. breaks the ice between your employees, producing more positive relationships between everyone within the workplace. There are various activities that you can try out yourself, or you could always bring in a specialist team building agency to help you out!

As you can see, there’s a whole lot to take into consideration when you do take on staff. But the steps that you need to take to ensure that they are as productive as possible are relatively simple!
