Preparing Yourself For More Permanent Home-Working

The coronavirus has changed things for many people, and one of the biggest changes has been the move to home-working. While most people thought this would be temporary, it could now be a permanent move for many employees.

So if you’ve been working from a temporary desk, or even your sofa, it’s time to rethink your home setup and get everything you need ready to get to work at home.

Create the ideal home office

To be able to work from home effectively, you’re going to need the right home office setup. Starting with your desk, you’ll need something that’s big enough and functional, and features enough storage so that you can put all of your work stuff away.

Don’t forget to invest in a comfortable, adjustable chair to help you maintain good posture while you’re doing your 9-5.

Find your outlet for stress relief

One of the most difficult things about working from home is finding it hard to separate work and your home life. When you’re feeling stressed about work, you need to be able to be free your mind of it and find ways to relax in your home. Why not treat yourself to an electric foot massager as a great way to destress in the evenings or during your lunch break?

Try to keep your work to one room, leaving the rest of your home as somewhere you can relax and unwind.

Prepare for emergencies

Working from home means you’re without many of the protections and procedures that are in place for you at the office. You should think about things like having a backup internet connection, boosted insurance, as well as consider diesel generators if your work is critical and can’t afford to deal with a power cut. Conduct a risk assessment for yourself to make sure you’ve covered the different risks that could come with working from home.

Make an effort to stay social and active

As you’ll be working and living in your home now, you need to adjust your daily routine. From making sure you stick to set working hours, to getting out during your lunch break, you’ll feel much more focused if you set yourself a routine. Remember to fit in some daily exercise and make plans to socialise where you can. Even if you’re not with your colleagues in the office day in, day out, you can still meet them for lunches, drinks and take your meetings face to face now and then.

Working from home is a big adjustment, but if you get your home, and yourself, ready for it, you can make the transition much easier. While it is a change from what you’re used to, there are a lot of benefits that come with working from home too. Help yourself make the most of them by finding that right balance so you can embrace this new way of working.
