Proper Employee Management Is The Key To Success For Restaurant Businesses

Running a restaurant business is one of the most hectic things you can do. There’s rarely a dull moment, and your life is dominated by the need to outperform your competitors. There are loads of restaurants that have gone on to become multi-national businesses with huge success. Likewise, plenty have fallen at the first hurdle.

More often than not, you can narrow down the success of a restaurant to its employees. If you learn how to manage yours properly, you will put yourself on the path to success. Primarily, there are two real concerns regarding your staff that need to be zoned in on and managed effectively.

Kitchen Etiquette

The way your employees operate in the kitchen is a key concern for your business. If they’re not following general hygiene and food safety rules, then your restaurant will never take off. You’ll end up with a low rating for food hygiene, warding people off your establishment.

So, what can you do to manage the situation and ensure their kitchen habits are up to scratch? Well, it starts by improving the food hygiene situation in your kitchen. A lot of restaurants will buy stainless steel commercial tables to keep food on in their kitchen. The trick is to have one table for each particular thing. For example, you only put meat on one table, and then veg on another. This keeps raw meat separate when being prepared, helping your staff avoid contaminating meals. Furthermore, you could make the simple addition of plastic gloves, to help handle raw meat. This prevents the spread of salmonella, as your staff don’t get raw meat on their hands.

It’s little things like this that show how good employee management completely changes the way your kitchen operates. It goes from being a place of poor food hygiene to a place with a high rating – all because you stepped in to manage your employees properly!

Customer Service

Naturally, customer service is very important for restaurants. You have a team of people waiting tables and serving your customers, and they need to do so with a smile. If they seem bored or uninterested, it ruins the dining experience for your customers. As such, they’ll either complain, never return, or both!

With proper employee management, you can keep customer service levels as high as possible. One idea is to look at the shift patterns of your staff. If someone has a ridiculously long shift, they might get agitated and annoyed towards the end as they’ve been working for ages. So, you can address this with shorter shifts and more rotations, or frequent breaks. Keep your staff fresh, and their customer service will improve.

All you’ve done here is address one issue, but it will make a massive difference in how your employees behave towards customers. As a result, service will be spectacular, and business will be booming.

Success in this industry is all about getting the most out of your employees. I’ve given you two key concerns that you need to think about with regards to managing your employees. As the owner, you’re in charge of ensuring your staff bring you up, rather than let you down.
