Stop Wasting Away In A Cubicle: Make The Dream Career Happen
We’ve all been there. Perhaps you jumped straight into the first secure job you could find after college, or perhaps you were deeply passionate about the industry, the company, or the role in which you find yourself once upon a time. However, for whatever reason (and there may be many), you now find yourself hating your job, like so many other people. Of course, it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to waste away in a cubicle feeling unproductive and unfulfilled. There’s always a way to create a dream career out of a seemingly dead-end career. Here are some pieces of advice to help you do so.
Apply yourself in your current role.
As suggested over at jobs.ac.uk, you have to reflect on your current job role before you make any rash decisions to move on. Maybe you could start by making a list of all the things you do and don’t like about your current job. You might find that the reason you’re not moving forward in the company is that you’re not applying yourself to move forward. The work might’ve become repetitive, but perhaps that’s because you’re doing the bare minimum.
There’s nothing stopping you from taking the initiative and trying to turn your job into something more exciting. If you want to get on your boss’ radar and climb the career ladder then you need to work hard; you need to pursue new projects and try to take on more responsibility around the workplace. Prove to your employer that you deserve a promotion because you don’t if you’re clocking in at 9, working an absent-minded routine, and then clocking out at 5.
Get training and applying.
Of course, if you apply yourself to your job role and you find that you still don’t enjoy it (and that you don’t even want a promotion) then that might be a sign that you’ve simply fallen out of love with the job role itself, the company, or perhaps even the industry in which you find yourself. It’s never too late to move on if you come to this decision, however. You’re not trapped in that cubicle, and you don’t have to quit your job straight away. You could start by taking night classes in a subject that interests you more and finding some way to get training or get qualified whenever you have spare time.
Once you feel prepared to tackle a new industry and you’ve done your research then it’s time to start sending off applications. You could head over to sites such as eagleheadhunters.co.uk for help with getting placed in key companies within your industry, but it’s obviously important that you acquire some form of qualification or training with your new line of interest first. You’ll need to make it clear that you’re moving away from your old career for good.
All in all, only you can make your dream career happen. You have to make the decision to cut ties with your current job and move on to something new. As mentioned in another of our articles, the main thing you need to think about is simply brushing up on interview skills, tidying up your CV, and either having some form of qualifications or experience for the role in question.
