Tips For Your First Day at Your New Job
The initial day of a new occupation can make you both excited and anxious. It is just like traveling to a new country for the first time; you will be seeing and learning new things, but you will also have to try and adapt and communicate in a language that you are not used to when starting a new job.
Every occupation and workplace is different. Some firms will try and ensure that the on-boarding process is smooth, positive, useful and exciting while others may be more stand-offish and leave you to learn the ropes on your own. Regardless of the situation, the initial day is when you will see and speak to your new co-workers, and it presents an opportunity to make the first impression which will follow in this job position.
If you are nervous, here are a few tips that will ensure that you do not start off on the wrong foot. These tips will also help get rid of those jitters and help you make a good first impression at your new workplace.
Be Ready
It is always important to be prepared for any situation. Just like your job interview, the impact you make and the initial impression you give will both depend on the amount of preparation you have done prior. So, take some time to understand your duties in your new job position, do a background check on the company again and try as much as you can to comprehend the culture of the new workplace. If possible, it might be a good idea to take a break before your new position to get yourself both physically and mentally ready.
Preparation will help you start off in a smooth manner, but it ideally means you will be up for the challenge in the coming few weeks or months. Keep in mind that you will be on a probationary period, whereby you are observed to ascertain that you are really the right fit for the position and that you meet the required standards.
Lastly, on the preparation point, ensure you bring everything the position asks for. This could be documents like your passport, insurance details. It’s also a good idea to bring a folder to store paper that you might be given including the contract. Also, ensure you get a good night’s sleep before the big day. You’ll want to be focused on the first day at work. This post has some good advice for job seekers in the UK.
Dress Well and Arrive on Time
Similar to your interview, it is best to be cautious of what you wear. After spending a few days in the new workplace, you will get an idea of what kind of attire workers wear. However, it should not hurt to give the impression that you have made a certain effort.
More often than not, you are asked to arrive a bit later to give the team time to prepare. Regardless, it is advisable you leave about 30 minutes earlier than you would in order to get in time. This will give you time to adjust to the new environment and maybe grab a cup of coffee to freshen up and reduce the nervousness.
Introduce Yourself
Your supervisor or a co-worker may show you around the workplace and introduce you to the team, but this is not always the case. Regardless, it is wise to be proactive and make an effort to introduce yourself to as many colleagues as possible. Make an effort of remembering their names.
In some companies, you’re asked to jot an introductory email. In such case, take your time on the task. Even if it is not mandatory, it is still worth it as people will know who you are.
Be Organized
It is highly unlikely that you will be asked to get into projects on the first day. So, if you have some time, use it to get organized, adjusted and understanding the new place of work. This can be knowing where the washrooms are located, coffee machines, fire exits etc.
In terms of work, it is a new start and so, ensure you start as you mean to go on. This means working on time management and understanding where you should improve and what you have been lacking in your previous position. Take notes to understand how things work in the new workplace so that you do not have to ask too often. You can also use your spare time to organize and prioritize any tasks that are made clear to you.
Build a momentum and be as proactive as possible. This means putting yourself forward for responsibilities and tasks, asking questions, etc. A good way to make an excellent first impression is to become a self-starter. People will certainly appreciate your efforts and assistance. Showing your initiative on the first day can be a positive marker for the future.
Understand the Company’s Culture
Walk around the workplace and get to know the people you will be working with. For most organizations, cultural fit is of prime importance. The company and your long-term success largely depend on how the team works. That means you need to be a part of the new community as soon as possible.
There is the possibility that you will be required to socialize in a bar or other venue with the co-workers. Ensure you attend as it is a good situation to observe people outside the workplace and get to learn their true personality. Of course, you should be careful about drinking too much as you are not in the right position to be very comfortable and open with new colleagues. Save the too drunk behavior for the Christmas party. Keep in mind that you want to make a good initial impression and get to know more about the other workers without too much pressure.
As mentioned earlier, the first day can be exciting and can make you quite nervous. However, knowing what to do and what to expect can help alleviate the nervousness and help you adapt to the workplace quickly.
