What To Do When A Career Goes Wrong
Careers are very imperfect things. Some new paths arise, others fade away. They change, bend, mold and flex with the times and the industries of the world. Wages rise, they fall, they stagnated. A lot can happen in anyone career – and unfortunately, some things can go wrong, even in the best of career paths. We can lose our jobs, through no fault of our own, we might not get the job we wanted, we might see our application rejected, or we might even get hurt at work. There’s a lot that can go wrong, and we need to prepare for that. It’s like life. There are good patches and rough patches, and we need to prepare for that downtime. If not, it could take us by surprise.
So, what could go wrong with a career? Well – for one – you might lose your job. You could lose your job for any number of reasons – and a lot of the time it might not be your fault. You could lose your job because of the company’s performance; you might lose your job because of a cost-cutting measure as well. These things happen.
You can’t really save your job usually, so the best thing to do is always be on the lookout for new and exciting opportunities. These aren’t really just escape routes, but things you should be doing anyway, because jobs can be cut at any moment, and you’d ideally want to move onto pastures new before that happens. At any rate, there’s nothing wrong with looking for new opportunities.
Work can also cause us harm. From a silly slip on a spill, right through to aggressive bullying and toxic environments. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of workplaces that don’t really value the safety of the employees working there, so you need to be vigilant and look out for yourself. It could certainly be a type of situation where you may end up seeking work accident compensation to make up for any sort of accident. Hold your place of work accountable for its actions, and if it’s not doing a good job of health and safety – or being an inclusive environment, you might have a case to fight. Every workplace should be a safe place for employees. Bullying and any form of aggression has absolutely no place in the place of work. This should go without saying, but it’s not the case. Some managers do like to enforce discipline by taking the wrong approach, and this can create a toxic atmosphere. This should be something that can be resolved with a discussion.
Things don’t always work out – you might not be able to get the new role you want, you might not be able to change your workplace for the good. That’s ok – your chance will come – but as long as you are doing the right thing, you can make the best of a bad situation and be in a good position if your career takes a turn for the worst.
