3 Health & Safety Essentials For Your Office
There are a few things that you need to be cautious of when running your business. Health & safety is one of these things. It’s one of the most critical aspects of a company, as it can affect so much of what you do. If there are health & safety issues in your small business, then the chances are you’ll end up losing money somehow. This either comes from fines, a lack of business due to a poor reputation, or the total closure of your company.
With that in mind, you need to do all you can to maintain excellent health & safety practices at all times. Part of this will mean your office needs to be well-equipped to abide by the rules and regulations. So, here are a few essentials that your office must have:
Fire Exits
There need to be fire exits in your office. The precise number of these exits will vary depending on the size of your workplace. But, you will definitely need at least one. This provides you and your team with a quick and safe exit route from the building. If there’s a safety inspection and they find you don’t have any proper fire exits, then you’ll most likely be forced to close down until this is rectified.
Fire/Smoke Alarms
Similarly, you need an alarm system that notifies you of any potential hazards in the office. A fire/smoke alarm is a prime example of that. Make sure you have a system that easily detects smoke and can sound the alarm for everyone to hear. Consider installing a Piezo transducer to ensure there’s a loud buzzing sound that your whole office will hear right away. Being able to alert people to a problem is key if you want to minimize health & safety risks in your business. Also, there should probably be multiple alarms if you have a large office with various rooms. The last thing you want is for a fire to start in one room and nobody to know anything until the alarm goes off in another. By that time it may have spread and caused damage!
Signage
Finally, you need to have some excellent signage in your office. Some of this is permanent – like hazard signs warning you of electric currents or potentially dangerous equipment. These signs exist to let people know where the risks are, so accidents can be reduced. Likewise, some of these signs only need to come out in certain situations. For example, a wet floor sign won’t be on display all the time, but it’s essential to prevent slip and fall injuries if the floor is slippery.
No matter how you look at it, a business can’t shy away from its health & safety responsibilities. You are in charge of creating a safe working environment for your employees, alongside a safe zone for any clients or anyone else that enters your workplace. At the end of the day, if accidents happen at work, then you’re held accountable. So, to keep your reputation high – and to avoid needless lawsuits – be sure you develop a detailed health & safety plan that includes these three things.
