63% of Firms Use Video Interviews for hiring – 7 Tips on How to Ace Video Interviews

Research from the office team, recently reported in PRNewswire, tells us that 63% of HR Managers interviewed said that their company currently conducts job interviews by video which is 14% higher than a year ago.

HR managers were asked, “How often, if at all, does your company conduct job interviews using video technology?” Their responses:

Although this is a US survey there is nothing to suggest that these statistics won’t be replicated to a great or lesser extent throughout the world. Why? Make sure your immediate desk area which will be seen by the video interviewer is tidy and professional. Also, make sure that you camera is set up so that the camera is directly in front of you as this will appear as if you are looking directly at the interviewer and will be far more engaging.

2.Test your audio visual tools; Buy a good quality microphone and HD video camera to ensure the highest quality audio visual presentation. Test out video and microphone software and hardware with a friend to check all is OK.

3. Do a trial run; video conference with a friend or two and ask them for feedback on how close you should be to the camera and what adjustments you need to make to your surroundings for a better viewing experience.

4. Dress to impress; make sure you dress formally in the way you would for a face to face interview. However, avoid bright, garish colours or tops with patterns or stripes as this will appear distracting. Try and have a shirt which contrasts a little with the wall colour behind you, so you make an impact and don’t just blend in with the background.

5.Do an audio visual check at the start of the call; Once the call has started, ask the interviewers if they can see you and hear you clearly. Make any necessary adjustments according to their feedback.

6. Be Confident; video conference with a friend or two and ask them for feedback on how close you should be to the camera and what adjustments you need to make to your surroundings for a better viewing experience.

7. Treat it like a normal face to face interview; simple, prepare as you would for a face to face interview which means practicing interview questions and having questions ready to ask the interviewers. Make sure to follow-up with a thank you note.
