How to Improve Employee Productivity and Morale

Workplace productivity can be a difficult variable to manage as a business leader, especially if you find yourself in a management role for the first time. Recent government statistics found that workplace satisfaction have remained steady since the 1970s, but that those in lower income brackets are more likely to feel underappreciated – and less likely to feel like they have autonomy in their work.

Productivity and morale are inextricably linked; one often begets the other. A dissatisfied and disenfranchised staff cohort can lead to a poor quality of work, and an undesirable work environment that may fail to attract new talent. So, how can you inspire and motivate your staff to perform their best, and how can you ensure they are content as can be in their work?

Employee Incentives

As briefly touched upon in the introduction, for an employee to improve their productivity there needs to be a key motivator. Pride in one’s work is an important factor in any individual’s productivity, but not enough alone to guarantee best performance.

As an employer, you could seek to introduce employee incentives that reward hard and diligent work; a sales department could benefit from a monthly prize for most sales or biggest contract; other departments could see an ‘Employee of the Month’ reward that recognises individual contributions. Offering incentives such as these demonstrates that your business is committed to the recognition of employee efforts, as well as rewards those who go above and beyond.

Investment in Tools

Even companies with a positive and progressive company culture may find that their staff’s motivation, and thus productivity, are waning. These businesses are often victims of technological obsolescence, as the tools employees use for their day-to-day work become less and less suited for the challenges of the modern day. This can be true of older industrial equipment and dated office software alike.

Here, investment in infrastructure can go a long way to improving productivity and morale together. By taking out a business loan to invest in new technology, you can put fresh, up-to-date tools in the hands of your staff and improve the efficiency with which they carry out their work.

Playing to Strengths

It is important for your as a leader to recognise each employee as an individual contributor, just as much as a constituent part of a larger machine. This is true on an emotional level, but also on a logistical one. Different employees may have different strengths and weaknesses, which the rigid structure of their job roles and daily tasks do not allow to shine through.

By nurturing natural talents in your staff, you can foster a skilled team and ensure the right progression pathways are presented to the right people. This provides an implicit security to your team, as well as the assurance that you have their best interest at heart – engendering the best results from them in turn.
