One of the biggest steps in the life of any business is the moment where it seems as though it’s time for you to move into a bigger and better-equipped office space. So many businesses start out being run from someone’s spare room but there comes a point when doing that simply isn’t an option anymore. Because of that, the temptation to move to a bigger office can be incredibly tempting, but it’s worth thinking carefully about whether or not your business is actually ready for this kind of significant step forward. With that in mind, here are some questions to ask yourself before moving your business to a bigger office.
Do you need the space?
The main reason for expanding to a bigger office is, unsurprisingly, because you need more space. However, you need to ask yourself just how much space you really need. After all, in an age when the vast majority of business is conducted online, it’s not nearly as important that a more successful business have more space as it once might have been. Think about the physical requirements of your business carefully. Do you need space for more employees? Does your business need large machinery in order to function? Without these kinds of things, you might not need the kind of space that a large office provides.
Can you afford it?
When it comes to unsustainable growth, one of the biggest and most common mistakes that a lot of business owners make is that they end up trying to expand beyond what they can actually afford. Things like new equipment or more employees can be incredibly expensive, and if your business isn’t at the stage where it can support those kinds of expenses, you’re going to end up running it into the ground. It’s good to be ambitious, but you should never try to push your business beyond what is reasonable and the present moment.
Is the space available?
Finding the right office for your business is a lot like trying to find a new home. You need to find the right space for your needs and settling for somewhere that doesn’t tick your boxes can be a serious mistake. If you desperately need to find a new space but you haven’t come across anywhere that’s perfect for your business yet then consider using a temporary space. There will almost always come a time when you do need a new and bigger space for your business, but the reality is that rushing into it can cause just as many problems as it solved. Trying to grow your business in any kind of unsustainable way is almost certainly going to lead to the whole thing becoming overly bloated and crumbling under its own weight. Make sure that every step that you take in your business is the right one and that you never try to take on too much before you’re ready.
