Are you desperately searching for the perfect job? Have you been looking for work for weeks or months with limited success? If you’re finding it tough to get back into employment, here are some of the reasons the offers may not be flooding in.
You’re applying for the wrong jobs
When you’re looking for jobs, are you paying attention to the job description and reading the essential requirements? If you’re not, and you’re just firing off endless applications for roles that sound interesting, this is where you may be going wrong. Often, a job advert will include information about the ideal candidate. If you don’t match the requirements, you’re not going to get past the first round. If you’re looking for a job in sales, for example, but you have no experience, you’re not going to be able to compete with somebody who has been working in sales for the last few years.
You’re pitching your application at the wrong level
Have you been told that you’re over-qualified or are you constantly losing out to other candidates as a result of a lack of experience? It’s important to tailor your search to find a job that’s relevant to your skill level and your experience. If you want to be able to compete at the highest level, it’s worth looking into options like further study. If people you’re going up against for a job have got more qualifications, it’s likely that they’ll be successful. If you’re interested in leading projects, for example, have a look at options like a masters in engineering management online. You can study part-time, and once you’ve got qualifications under your belt, you’ll be able to compete on a level playing field. Look at the desired qualifications and skills on the job description. If you tick all the essential requirements, but you’re still not getting a look in, this is probably because other applicants also possess the desired attributes. It may be that you need to gain more experience in certain scenarios or gain skills, such as being able to use specific programs or software.
You’re not the best candidate on paper
These days, to find a job you have to be able to impress on paper. If you can’t put a great application together, you’re not going to get to the stage where you can dazzle a panel with your responses to tricky questions or your fabulous personality. Make sure your resume is up to date, and tailor each application to the job. You’ll need to tweak your resume and the cover letter to make your submission relevant to the role and the company.
Your search area is too narrow
Sometimes, it’s impossible to find the right job because you’re not looking in the right area. If you’ve restricted yourself to a 5-mile search area around your home, it’s unlikely that you’re going to land your dream job unless you’re very lucky. Cast the net wider. If you end up with a job slightly further away, you may be able to make it work for you without a long commute. You may be able to work remotely, for example.
